Equipment Upgrade is essential as you progress into to game, as you need stronger equipment to kill the mobs or clear certain quests effectively. Upgrades allows you to unlock more stats, certain effects and even "transform" your equipment.
Not all equipment could be upgraded, you should check for something like the image below (Equipment Upgrade with Roman numbers). You could also check for the red arrow sign beside the equipment (only if you have the equipment).
Clicking the red arrow will allows you to Quick Upgrade, where you could see the materials and Zeny needed to upgrade.
Clicking Quick Buy allows you to see the total costs needed for you to buy the remaining materials needed for the upgrade. Click Buy to quickly buy the materials from exchange (it will be instant and you do not have to talk to Exchange NPC to claim the materials)
After you have bought all the materials, you could upgrade the equipment instantly.
Alternately, you could go to the specific NPC to upgrade your equipment (different equipment will have different upgrade NPC).
*There is really no point to go to the NPC as you could upgrade your equipment from your bag (but do visit the NPC or they will be lonely xD)
If you have enough materials to upgrade the equipment, there will be a green arrow beside your equipment. Click the arrow and you will be asked to confirm the upgrade.
Once you have upgraded your equipment, there will be a Roman Number beside it.
If you have reached a certain upgrades, your Tier 1 equipment could be "transformed" to Tier 2. The name of your equipment will changed and there will be some drawbacks.
1) Your refine level of the said equipment will be reduced by 2 level.
2) Your slotted equipment will be un-slotted (cards will be refunded).
Despite the drawbacks, it is still a good idea to transform your equipment as there will be new upgrades available for that equipment. Especially if your equipment is clean (without refine and not slotted).
**However, you need to make 11 of the same equipment in order to unlock the card slot. If your card is decent, you might want to save enough Zeny to be able to make 11 equips before transforming your main one (some card effects have better effects than transformed equipment).
